Simmons

Take out the Red Sox paragraph, the assorted bits about his fantasy teams and a few odds and ends* and Bill Simmons has written...a pretty good baseball column. In fact, scratch that - by the usual standard for a baseball column by the Palookaville Post or, you know, anything written on ESPN.com, this is an outstanding baseball column. If he keeps this up I'll have to mothball "Bill Simmons references" entirely. Alright, that's not likely, but it certainly looks like the old girl has some life in her yet.

*Kevin Youkilis was a major point of discussion in Moneyball, and would have gone to Oakland if Theo hadn't stepped in and said no. Now he's a major part of the Red Sox lineup. And Jorge Julio is not a quality relief pitcher. He's having a decent half-season in Arizona, which is unsustainable long-term. Just wanted to clear that up.

It's also important to note that the Ben Broussard deal ranks as one of our worst moves in recent history. A "good mideason deal"? Really? A 24-year-old lefthanded rightfielder who can hit for a 30-year-old lefthanded DH who can hit? Meanwhile, Choo is at .317/.388/.533 in 60 at-bats this season and the M's started Willie Bloomquist in right field during a game against the Rangers this week (with Ichiro at DH). This is almost as bad as letting Carlos Guillen walk in free agency a few years ago in favor of Rich Aurilia.

How could you forget one of the worst trades of our time? Bavasi actually traded Guillen for utility infielder Ramon Santiago (47 abs with the Mariners) and one of the Juan Gonzalezs always floating around the league (never made the ML team). He then signed Aurilia to replace Guillen.

So it goes. All of the Bavasi deals bleed together for me into a nightmarish cocktail of the corpse of Rey Sanchez and Adrian Beltre's OPS. Is it football season yet?

So close. So close. Fucking Clinton Portis.

On the bright side, I'm listening to the Orioles broadcast this afternoon (that's obviously not the bright side) and playing in the background (not at the park, but on the broadcast itself) as they came back from break after the bottom of the 1st was the song "I Will Dare" by the Replacements.

If I can get this poster that I'm working on done by the end of the day (and I certainly should) I'll have a new post up tonight.
